Splendid isolation is body of work started during the first lockdown of 2020, which continues the theme of exploring the contemporary shape and function of the traditional public statue- a thing which was thrown into the public consciousness at the time.
Inspired by the question we are all conscious of, asking us what should be presented in public in such an unchanging manner (as a person shaped statue), these studies reflect the fluid poise of contemporary urban subjects seen isolated and separate from their surroundings whilst being a part of that landscape, a public anonymity that is still full of grace and beauty and pride.
Inspired by the study of the ballet dancer Nijinsky by Rodin, the work focuses on the physical presence of the subject to attempt a greater sense of realism through its form.
The flow of light on the glossy monochrome surface highlights the process of melting the fluid immediacy of the sculpted wax original, further blending and blurring the surface to create the sense of silhouette and shadow form without obvious detail.
The sumptuous delicacy of the shapes may at first glance appear arbitrary or random, but on closer inspection they reveal a fold of cloth, a delicate ripple of hair, a zip fastener, revealing a deliberate and specific technical mastery behind the forms.
Each piece is hand signed and numbered in a limited edition of 25, finished with a felt base. The material is a resin made from recycled plastics.

DEVORABIT (literally translated as CONSUME! in latin)
“For this his third solo show in London…(Hedger) has taken his work back to the image, the ubiquitous imagery of advertising, and recontextualises magazine photo shoots endorsing designer & beauty products as classical salon statuettes.
Endorsement, prestige & allure are presented and manipulated, yet the exquisite sense of touch and placement, of visual wit and mastery of his craft that so defines Hedgers' work presents us with the quintessential arthood of the glamour essential to the marketing of the designer object.
In a reversal of his previous work Hedger has taken the transitory and imbibed it with a form of historical permanence and purpose. Frivolous and decorative on the one hand, subtly visually disturbing on the other, these small Salon style sculptures throw out questions on the promotion of the sense of lack that is key to the global marketing of consumer products, whilst illustrating and celebrating its historical heritage within society.”
